Top Tier Fuel Certification — Because the Brand Behind the Pump Matters
Most drivers pick a gas station by price alone, which makes sense on the surface. But there's a variable that affects your engine quietly over time: fuel detergent quality. Top Tier is a voluntary certification program — originally created by BMW, GM, Honda, Toyota, and Volkswagen — that requires gasoline to contain 3 to 4 times the detergent additive levels mandated by EPA minimum standards.
The reason this matters: lower-detergent fuel allows carbon deposits to build up on intake valves and fuel injectors over miles. A 2016 AAA study tested Top Tier versus non-Top Tier fuel over 4,000 simulated miles and found 19 times more intake valve deposits with non-Top Tier gas. Those deposits reduce combustion efficiency, dragging fuel economy down 2–4% and, in some engines, causing rough idle or hesitation at speed.
BP is a licensed Top Tier retailer. Rock Springs Market carries BP fuel at all grades — regular 87, mid-grade, and premium — so every fill-up meets Top Tier detergent standards. Not every station in Smyrna can say that. You can verify any brand's status at toptierfuel.com.
